While still violent on some occasions and by the time of the PS4 game, Kratos is a much more caring and forgiving person and tries to not use violence unless he has to. His backstory is played super sympathetically as well as how much he has suffered. Like many of the divinities in the series, Ares underestimates anyone they don't deem worthy, which is a pretty lousy choice as Kratos then proceeds to obliterate him in the coming battle. He was devastated when he accidentally killed his wife and child, he was distraught over being forced to kill his mother in what amounts to a mercy kill and the death of his brother after discovering him is what motivates his war against the gods. The final boss of the original God Of War, Ares, is the man Kratos has been hunting down this entire time after a broken promise the God made to our protagonist. He cares deeply about his entire family. This doesn’t fully excuse everything he does but it does make him a sympathetic character and a lot of his actions understandable. 
And once he gets his revenge on Ares, he isn’t able to die and keeps getting screwed over by the gods again and again. He was screwed over by the gods at every turn ended up basically losing his entire family, not once but twice. Kratos knows about this but keeps going anyway motivated solely by his own selfish desire for revenge.
During this, Kratos murders all the gods one by one which each death causing a major apocalypse that by the end wipes out nearly all of humanity. Kratos recruits the titans and leads them in a massive war against the gods. After killing Zeus, Kratos brags about it and continues to fuck people up like a good-for-nothing cunt who has no regard for anyone whatsoever. He murders Zeus out of vengeance for all he has done to him. In the second game, he wages a war against the gods leading his army to battle on major cities with many dying as a result of this. He murders Ares out of revenge for the death of his family, while justified it is still revenge. This also applies for the second and third game. A lot of them are just random monsters and people who are actively trying to kill him, but just as many are just him being a dick. Throughout the first game, Kratos murders a lot of people. When he breaks his blood oath with Ares, he murders all the furries who are sent to stop him. During another of his routine village raids, he ends up killing his wife and child. When Kratos fought against the barbarian king, he made a blood oath with Ares to wipe out his entire army. Kratos’ army is so vicious that apparently raiding entire villages and killing all of its inhabitants is routine. All of this is to satiate Kratos’ insatiable desire for war and bloodshed.

What follows is a series of attempts to free himself from the influence of the gods and the Titans and exact revenge.
